Methian sank farther into his seat, his gaze fixed on the scene at the bar. This wasn’t one of his usual haunts and he couldn’t have known Lornyc would’ve been there. A small group of musicians had played an interesting set, making the ambience of the place mellow and relaxed, but Methian was far from feeling calm. For the last forty minutes, he’d been fixated on the scene developing in front of him. Charon grunted and Methian tore his gaze away from where Lornyc, who hadn’t even noticed that Methian was there, was talking to another man, a man who was completely unsuitable for him.

“If you’re going to ignore me, I might as well go back to my room and write the essay I’ve been threatening to finish for two weeks.” Charon nudged him. “What is wrong with you?”

“Nothing.”

Charon hummed and then laughed. “Is that nothing the black-haired man over there that’s been making you act like a fucking lovesick idiot all week?”

Methian looked back to the bar, the grip on his tankard almost painful as he saw the bastard sitting next to Lornyc rest his hand on Lornyc’s thigh. “I’m over that. Honestly, I’m just concerned for a course-mate. I’m sure I recognise the guy Lornyc’s talking to from somewhere, and I think I remember someone saying he was a sleaze.”

“Right, I believe you. Or maybe I would if I hadn’t seen you guzzle the best part of a bottle of brandy last night and pass out proclaiming you were in torment.”

“I did not!”

Charon shook his head. “You could barely stand, let alone remember what you said. For crying out loud, Methian, you’re either gonna have to let it go, or do something about it. Because your boy is unlikely to be going home alone tonight. It’s up to you, whether it’s with the guy at the bar, or with you.”

The man talking to Lornyc slid off his chair, and Methian took the split-second decision to follow Charon’s advice. “Lornyc’s friend looks like he’s going to the toilet. Can you head him off on his way back?”

“How am I supposed to do that?”

Methian clapped him on the shoulder. “You’ll think of something. I thought you’d be glad I’m doing what you suggested for once.”

His suspicion Lornyc hadn’t realised he was there was confirmed when Lornyc saw him and seemed startled. “Methian? Where did you spring from?”

“I was having a drink with a friend, when saw you and thought I’d come over and say hello, since you’re on your own.”

Lornyc peered around him, and Methian thought he was searching for the guy he’d been talking to. Methian glanced over as well and saw Charon had managed to sidetrack him and were heading towards a billiards table. Lornyc deflated.

“I didn’t think I was, but apparently I am.”

“Since I’m here, can I get you a drink?”

Lornyc bit his lip, and took a moment to answer. “Yeah, why not.”

Methian slid onto the now empty chair opposite Lornyc, waved down the barman and ordered two silver rangers, a drink made from a local liquor that was lower in alcohol.
